Question: How Do I choose the right carpet?
Answer: Colour, fibre, construction and budget are all considerations. You’ll also need to think about whether the carpet is intended for a high or low traffic area in your home
The Lowdown
100 % wool carpets are soft underfoot and look luxurious but is better kept to lower traffic areas such as bedrooms. A more popular combination is 80% wool and 20% man-made fibre. This makes the carpet more durable and si is suited to high traffic areas such as hallways and stairs. 100% man-made carpets are now also available that look and wear like 80/20 wools and are often more competetively priced.
Consider how much light the room gets as this will affect colour choice – a warm shade will make a large space feel cosy, whereas a cool tone can make a small room appear more spacious.
The construction of a carpet determines its look and performance: a twist pile, our most popular carpet type, is very resilient as the fibres are tightly turned; with a loop pile, the fibres are left uncut to form loops on the surface which creates a rustic look; velvet pile which is smooth cut and barely twisted, is soft and ideal for a luxurious bedroom.
Good underlay is vital and can double the life expectancy of your carpet. Underlay and fitting should never be skimped on and we only use excellent quality underlay and professional fitters.
Top Tip
If you get a stain on your carpet, don’t panic! Never rub it – instead, try blotting it with kitchen paper and then clean it with a solution made with half white vinegar and half warm water.
